Several companies offer medical insurance to same-sex partners of their employees, including for gender-reassignment surgery. However, not all companies provide insurance coverage to unmarried or live-in partners of straight employees, although legally there is no bar on this.
Information technology company IBM, conglomerate Godrej Group, hotel chain La-Lit, consultancy Accenture, IT services providers Cognizant and Tech MahindraNSE 1.38 % and HR services firm ADP are among the companies offering medical insurance to same-sex partners of their LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) employees.
Insurers Aditya Birla Health Insurance and SBI General Insurance told ET that they have products offering coverage for samesex partners of LGBTQ customers. However, reservations on revealing their sexual orientation may be stopping LGBTQ people from asking for coverage for their partners, said Subramanyam Brahmajosyula, head of underwriting and reinsurance at SBI General Insurance, who said he hadn’t heard of such requests yet.
